Engines want a happy rpm. Wheels need wildly different speeds. The transmission translates.
Your car is cruising on the highway. The ENGINE is spinning at 3000 rpm. The WHEELS are spinning at 700 rpm. Same car, totally different speeds. Something in the middle is doing TRANSLATION.
